The main principles of rehabilitation at Villa Melitta
All forms of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation in our private healthcare facility comply with the following principles:
Structure:
As is true for rehabilitation in general, the most important element is the multi-disciplinary team. The expertise of all those involved – doctors, physiotherapists, ergotherapists and logopaedists – is the essential component in ensuring that all work is carried out efficiently.
Processes:
There are several fundamental elements through which it is possible to sub-divide the work we do into different therapy stages:
- Monitoring the functions of the patient:
First and foremost, it is necessary to study in detail which functions the patient has lost and which functions remains (motor, sensory and cognitive functions).
- Setting an objective:
Based on the patient’s expectations and on the evaluation of the carer, a concrete, realistic treatment objective is set.
- Providing the therapy:
The therapy is provided in accordance with the following two principles:
1. exercising the damaged functions (exercising a paralysed arm)
2. compensating through the functions that have been retained (trying to dress using only the healthy arm)
- Monitoring the result:
The monitored functions are measured at the start of the treatment in order to monitor progress. The remainder of the course of therapy is defined on the basis of the initial monitoring.
Results:
Comparing the measurements before and after rehabilitation makes it possible to verify whether or not the expected results have been achieved. The effectiveness of the rehabilitation process has been shown by numerous studies carried out on a range of different groups of patients.
THE REHABILITATION TEAM
Our department includes more than 25 physiotherapists, along with 3 ergotherapists and 3 logopaedists, who carry out both individual and group therapies. The team members work closely together to ensure that the needs of the patients are met fully, deploying multi-disciplinary solutions where necessary.
We favour the use of innovative techniques and we participate in international research and study programmes in collaboration with the renowned Charité University Clinic in Berlin (Germany).
